Only 30% of 2017 UTME Candidates Will Be Admitted – NUC

The National Universities Commission, NUC, has said only 30 per cent of the 1.7 million candidates who wrote the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, will be admitted this year due to limited spaces in the universities.  The executive secretary of the commission, Abubakar Rasheed, was quoted as saying this at a one-day public hearing on the regulatory conflict between JAMB and universities in offering admission in Nigeria. The hearing was organised by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund on Tuesday. Mr. Rasheed said the limited spaces in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions have made admission crisis inevitable. Mr. Oloyede said most of the candidates, who sit for its examination annually do not have the required qualification to gain admission. “It is not true that we have 1.7 million candidates that are ready to go into the Nigerian university system. Of the 1.7 million that took the exam, I can say conveniently that not more than 30 per cent of the...

Maina:It didn’t emanate from my office, Head of Service of the Federation

Image
Meanwhile, the Head of Service of the Federation, HoSF, yesterday, washed her hands off the process that led to the reinstatement of Maina, saying his recall did not emanate from her office. The HoSF in a statement by the Head of Media, Mohammed Manga, said she neither approved Maina’s reinstatement nor promotion to the rank of an acting director and posting to the Interior Ministry as Head of Human Resources. Manga said, “The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF) wishes to inform the public that the reinstatement and posting of Alhaji Abdulrasheed Abdullahi Maina never emanated from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. “Consequently, the purported reinstatement and posting by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation is totally erroneous and misleading.” We know nothing of this — DSS In the same vein, the  Department of State Services, DSS, also washed its hands off the affair, saying it did not smuggle the embattled o...

Maina goes underground

Image
The order by President Buhari for his immediate sack and the resolve by EFCC to fish him out by all means to face justice might have forced Maina, who was declared wanted by the EFCC in 2015, to go underground apparently to avoid being apprehended.  Checks in the Ministry of Interior, where he had been promoted to an acting director in charge of Human Resources vide a letter dated October 2, 2017, showed that he did not report to that office to join other workers as work resumed, yesterday. The Spokesman for the Interior Ministry, Mr.Willie Bassey, denied knowledge of Maina’s presence or posting to the ministry but admitted reading about the controversies surrounding his reinstatement and posting to the office. Apparently, in a bid to ward off public enquiry about his travails, Maina has tactically switched off all his three known GSM lines. A call put to one of the lines yesterday afternoon reported that the line could not take any call at ‘this time’ while the other two ind...

Maina: Outrage as Danbazzau, Head of Service trade blames

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, angrily ordered the immediate dismissal from the civil service of the federation, of Abdulrasheed Maina, the erstwhile boss of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms. President Buhari was greatly embarrassed by the outrage that followed the recall and repositioning of Maina as a director, having abandoned the service upon the indictments raised against him on the misuse of an estimated N100 billion from the pension funds of the country. The controversy over the recall again exposed the frail relationships within the administration as the Head of Service, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, accused the Minister of Interior, General Abdulrahman Dambazau, of lying against her, following his earlier claim that her office posted Maina to the Ministry of Interior as a director. Meanwhile, the move was shadowed by diverse commendations and condemnations from different stakeholders. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, challenged the President to follow up ...

TENNIS:Nadal advance to quarter finals at China Open

Image
Rafael Nadal sent an ominous warning of intent when the 16-time Grand Slam winner crawled into the quarterfinals of the China Open on Thursday. The Spanish world number 1, enjoying a late-race floreo, dispatched promising Russia Karen Khachanov 6-3 and 6-3 in the hard field of Beijing. Nadal, the best striker and coming from the back of a third US Open title, faces American John Isner in the last eight. The 31-year-old Nadal broke Khachanov, ranked 42nd in the world in the fourth game and never had any serious problems after that. Khachanov, a 21-year-old rising talent, simply had no response to Nadal's explosive lead and made too many routine mistakes. Nadal broke the young Russian again in the third set of the second set while crossing in the last eight. It was a contrast to his opening in the Chinese capital, when Nadal saved two match points against Frenchman Lucas Pouille.

Chris Smalling says he is lucky to play with Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane

Image
Chris Smalling says struggling strikers Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane "have gotten close enough to the full package." Smalling plays with Lukaku for Manchester United and Kane for England and says the duo are among a select group of elite strikers. "There are not many players that you can compare with any of them," Smalling. "I think I'm lucky that I have Rom in United and when we go out with England, if I can do my job and stop the goals, it's inevitable that we'll score at least one or two." Lukaku and Kane are enjoying excellent seasons so far and Kane does not think either player has many deficiencies. "I've faced both of them, either for the Spurs and (former Lukaku club) Everton, and obviously now Rom in training," said Smalling. "They are two handfuls. "I think it's two strikers who have gotten close enough to the complete package, which makes them so successful." Saturday's 4-...

Cesc Fabregas confirms he threw pizza at Sir Alex Ferguson during 2004 'Battle of the Buffet'

Image
Cesc Fabregas finally confessed that he threw pizza at Sir Alex Ferguson during the famous 'Battle of the Buffet' at Old Trafford. The Chelsea midfielder had been suspected as the culprit in 2004 after Manchester United beat Arsenal 2-0 to end their unbeaten 49-game Premier League game and confessed to the Sky One League of their own. In the next episode, host James Corden asks Fabregas: "Tonight, can we finally put the flying pizza case on the bed once and for all? "Yes," replied Fabregas. "Suddenly, I heard noises (from the tunnel) and I thought it was happening, so I went out with my slice of pizza and saw Sol Campbell, Rio Ferdinand, Martin Keown ... everyone was pushing. "I was like, I want to come in but I do not know how and I threw ... peeew ... just throw it once I saw it was hitting, like, I was hitting, what I did not mean ..." Fabregas confirmed the pizza hit Ferguson in the face and added: "I apologize Sir Ale...

Kyle Edmund beaten by Alexander Zverev in China Open first round

Image
The British No. 2 Kyle Edmund has been eliminated from the Chinese Open in the first round after a consecutive loss to Alexander Zverev. Edmund lost 3-6 6-7 (3-7) to the German in Beijing, but he may be unlucky to have received such a hard tie in the first round. Zverev is in second place in the tournament, and has risen to a race number four in the world ranking. The match was won fairly comfortably by Zverev, who relied on his serve to power past Edmund. Zverev broke seven aces in comparison to his opponent's, and served only three double faults compared to Edmund's seven. The 20-year-old also won 71 percent of the points on his own service, while Edmund could only win 59 percent - highlighting the chasm between the two players on the day. Zverev made it easier for the first set, breaking Edmund twice to pass a 6-3 lead. But Edmund increased his game in the second set, and both players broke the serve when they entered a playoff. In short, however, it was...

Simona Halep beats Maria Sharapova in Beijing

Image
Simona Halep defeated Maria Sharapova for the first time in her career, breaking a 6-2 6-2 victory over the Russian in the third round of the China Open. Sharapova had won all seven previous meetings, including a tough showdown at the US Open this year. However, the five-year Grand Slam winner of 30 years has been inconsistent since her return from a 15-month suspension for taking the banned substance meldonium. And it was no match for Halep, as the No. 2 world produced a relentless display, with power-packed land strokes, gallant defense and almost no unforced error. "It was a great game, I think I played my best tennis against it, I have served quite well and the work I did after the US Open saw it on the court today," Halep said on the WTA official website. "I'm very happy to be able to do this, it's my first victory against her and I just want to enjoy the moment." Two wins this week will get Sharapova back into the top 100 for the first...

Marin Cilic and David Goffin through to quarter-finals at Japan Open

Image
Top seed Marin Cilic secured his place in the quarterfinals of the Japanese Open on Wednesday with a 6-3 6-4 victory over local wild card Yasutaka Uchiyama. The imposing Croat, runner-up to Roger Federer at Wimbledon this year and former US Open champion, needed just over an hour to complete the defeat in Tokyo. Cilic, the world number five and semifinalist in Japan last season, hit 14 aces and dropped only four of the 34 points on his first serve as he progressed. Then he faces American Ryan Harrison, who slowed the hopes of US Open finalist Kevin Anderson from qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals with a 6-3 1-6 7-6 (7-2) win. Eighth seed Diego Schwartzman beat Bernard Tomic 6-3 6-1 while fourth seed David Goffin kept his winning run in the first round after raising the Shenzhen Open trophy with a 7-5 and 6 -1 on Feliciano López.

Grigor Dimitrov beats Juan Martin del Potro, Nick Kyrgios defeats Mischa Zverev in China

Image
Grigor Dimitrov edged US Open semifinalist Juan Martin del Potro 7-6 (8-6) 7-5 to book his place in the quarterfinals of the China Open on Wednesday. After a 5-2 second-set break in Beijing, Dimitrov produced some of his best tennis to shoot the next five games for his second consecutive win over the Argentine this year. The Bulgarian, who prevailed when the pair met in the tough courts of Cincinnati in August, improved his head-to-head record against Del Potro to 2-5 and stayed on the hunt for a spot in the ATP Tour final Finals in London next month. The third seed then plays the fifth seed Roberto Bautista Agut. Aljaz Bedene lost 10 straight games before retiring with a knee problem. Elsewhere, Nick Kyrgios came from a set down to defeat Mischa Zverev 3-6 6-2 6-2. The Australian unleashed 11 aces in the match during an hour and 22 minutes. "I knew it was going to be complicated, he plays a fairly old type of tennis ... he likes to come and play his ten...

World No19 Nick kyrgios Smashes Racket

Image
Nick Kyrgios got his frustrations out on his racket after losing the first set of his second round China Open match against Mischa Zverev The argumentative Aussie shot a shot out at 5-3 in the match opening set in Beijing, conceding the opening set in the process. The ball flew away - and Kyrgios made no secret of his frustration when he sent his racket flying to the ground, destroying it instantly. The world No 19 is no stranger to a place of racket abuse, having sent several to the trash bin during his professional career. But the reverse did not derail him in Beijing, as he won the second and third set by 6-2 markers to defeat Zverev and advance to the next stage. And he even took time to relax during a conversation - sitting back in his chair and singing along with a song that played on the stadium speakers.

TENNIS:Nadal Survive with two match points,Thiem crashed out of Japan Open

Image
World No.1 Rafael Nadal survived two match points to defeat Frenchman Lucas Pouille in his opening match at the China Open in Beijing while Dominic Thiem crashed out of the Japanese Open. The Spaniard extended his winning run to eight straight victories after his recent win at the US Open, and was forced to show his fighting qualities to score a 4-6 7-6 (8-6) 7-5. Pouille broke Nadal on the way to take the first set, and the No. 23 world came close to beating a sealing win a clash when the second set was to a tiebreak. But Nadal, with the support of the Beijing crowd, was massively helped when the 23-year-old scored a single hit in his first match point, before the 16-time Grand Slam champion struggled to take him 8-6. The duo headed for a final shot and Nadal broke the resistance of Pouille in game 11 before serving for the set and match in two hours and 31 minutes of captivating action. "He played well, I think, very aggressive, he's ...
