Simona Halep beats Maria Sharapova in Beijing


Simona Halep defeated Maria Sharapova for the first time in her career, breaking a 6-2 6-2 victory over the Russian in the third round of the China Open.
Sharapova had won all seven previous meetings, including a tough showdown at the US Open this year.
However, the five-year Grand Slam winner of 30 years has been inconsistent since her return from a 15-month suspension for taking the banned substance meldonium.
And it was no match for Halep, as the No. 2 world produced a relentless display, with power-packed land strokes, gallant defense and almost no unforced error.
"It was a great game, I think I played my best tennis against it, I have served quite well and the work I did after the US Open saw it on the court today," Halep said on the WTA official website.
"I'm very happy to be able to do this, it's my first victory against her and I just want to enjoy the moment."
Two wins this week will get Sharapova back into the top 100 for the first time since his ban on doping, and gave all credit to Halep.
The 30-year-old said: "I think she played an incredible game, probably the best she's ever played against me at all our previous meetings." She was not so sharp.I was not watching the ball either.'t moving up and down , as I have been against it. "
With World No. 1 Garbine Muguriza already out of the tournament, Halep appears to be a major contender to go and claim the title in the Chinese capital.

The Romanian will continue in 11th place, Agnieszka Radwanska or Daria Kasatkina, who will face Wednesday.
French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia became the seventh player to qualify for the WTA Finals in Singapore with a 6-3 7-5 win over Australia's Samantha Stosur in the second round.
In addition to advancing to the third round were the Chinese Peng Shuai, who briefly made the work of Romanian Monica Niculescu with a 6-3 6-2 win, and Wuhan champion opened Caroline Garcia of France who beat Belgian Elise Mertens 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.
Ukrainian Elina Svitolina defeated Australian Ashleigh Barty 6-4 6-2 in the second round to create a clash with Elena Vesnina.
